Job Description
The purpose of this position is to supervise and perform maintenance and mechanical repair work on diversified gasoline and diesel vehicles and heavy equipment.
Receives general supervision from Fleet Manager.  Exercises no supervision.
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIESImportant responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
  1. Performs the repair of all street, water distribution, and construction trucks and equipment.
  2. Performs preventative maintenance on trucks and equipment.
  3. Maintains the shop and tools in an orderly fashion.
  4. Performs maintenance activities and repairs on other department vehicles as needed.
  5. Cleans and maintains work areas after repairs are complete.
Other Important Responsibilities and Duties
  1. Maintains and repairs equipment by washing, cleaning, changing the oil, repairing hoses, and changing flat tires.
  2. Assist in snow removal.
  3. Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
  1. Basic methods and techniques of general maintenance, and repair of trucks and heavy equipment.
  2. Equipment and tools used in the area of work assigned.
  3. Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Ability to:
  1. Repair equipment.
  2. Perform a variety of semi-skilled maintenance, construction, and repair work in the area of work assigned.
  3. Operate a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  4. Operate heavy machinery.
  5. Perform a variety of manual tasks for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions. 
  6. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  7. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  8. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  9. Follow all safety rules and regulations of the Public Works Department.
  10. Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:
    • Making observations
    • Communicating with others
    • Traveling to various work locations
    • Operating and maintaining assigned equipment and vehicles
  11. Maintain mental capacity which permits:
    • Making sound decisions and using good judgment
    • Determining and avoiding dangerous situations
  12. Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:
    • Walking, standing, bending, or crouching for extended periods of time
    • Lifting or moving moderate to heavy weights
    • Working under harsh weather conditions
    • Operating assigned equipment and vehicles
  13. Effectively handle a work environment and work conditions which involve:
    • Exposure to dust and dirt
    • Inclement weather conditions
    • Working closely with others
    • High levels of noise
High school diploma or equivalent.  Some experience performing public works maintenance and operating heavy machinery is required.  Missouri Class B Commercial Driver’s license is required.
Environmental Conditions
Travel from site to site; field environment; confined spaces; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, and inclement weather conditions; work around heavy construction equipment.
Physical Conditions
Essential and other important duties and responsibilities may require maintaining a physical condition necessary for walking, standing, bending, pushing, crawling, crouching, and lifting heavy objects for prolonged periods of time; and the operation of motorized equipment and vehicles.
Tools and Equipment
Tractors, trucks, backhoes, skid loaders, snow removal equipment, dump trucks, bore machines, road graders, rollers, track hoes, oil distributors, jack hammers, hydrostatic rollers, sweepers, cranes, dozers, and a variety of hand tools.
Miscellaneous Requirements
  1. Must successfully complete pre-employment substance abuse testing.
  2. Will be subject to random substance abuse testing.
  3. Will be subject to background investigation.
