POSITION SUMMARY
The Instructional Designer plays a key role in advancing high-quality, learner-centered instruction across the institution. In this collaborative and creative position, the Instructional Designer partners with faculty, academic staff, and campus sites to design engaging, inclusive, and outcomes-aligned courses in online, hybrid, and face-to-face modalities. Grounded in learning science, accessibility, and human-centered design, this role helps develop learning experiences that support student engagement, mastery, and long-term success. The Instructional Designer also contributes to faculty development by creating and facilitating workshops, webinars, consultations, and digital tutorials on topics such as online and hybrid teaching, Canvas usage, instructional technology integration, and innovative course design.Essential Job Duties
Some of the duties listed below would be day-to-day management of the Instructional Designer and will vary depending on the need(s) of the college. Priorities Include:- Assist in the administration of the learning management system (Canvas), including trouble-shooting, faculty support, and routine maintenance tasks.
- Collaborate with faculty to design and develop engaging, accessible, and outcomes-aligned courses in online, hybrid, and face-to-face formats.
- Support the integration and effective use of Learning Tools Interoperability (LTIs), multimedia tools, and other instructional technologies.
- Enhance digital learning, research and evaluate emerging technologies, digital tools, and instructional trends to inform evidence-based teaching practices.
- Create, maintain, and update instructional resources, templates, guides, and tools that promote scalable, high-quality instructional design practices.
- Develop and facilitate professional development opportunities – including workshops, webinars, consultations, and digital tutorials.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or appropriate administrator.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
·Bachelor’s degree in Educational/Instructional Technology, Curriculum & Instruction, Education, or a closely related field.
- At least one (1) year of instructional design experience in higher education or a comparable professional environment.
- Familiarity with learning management systems (Canvas preferred).
- Proficiency with instructional technologies that support digital and distance learning, including video, audio, screen-capture, and presentation tools.
- Ability to evaluate and apply emerging technologies, including AI-assisted tools, digital media platforms, and instructional applications.
- Understanding of learning science, adult learning theory, and evidence-based pedagogical and andragogical practices.
- Ability to interpret course analytics, assessment data, and user feedback to support instructional improvements.
- Strong collaboration and coaching skills for consultations, training, and faculty development.
- Ability to identify creative, practical solutions to instructional challenges using evidence-based approaches.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex information clearly and professionally.
- Strong organizational and project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple course development projects simultaneously.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
·Master’s degree or higher in Educational/Instructional Technology, Curriculum & Instruction, or a related field.
- Advanced proficiency with Canvas LMS, including course organization and analytics.
- Experience teaching or supporting college-level learners, including online or hybrid teaching or course development.
- Quality Matters (QM) or Online Learning Consortium (OLC) certification in online course design or delivery.
- Knowledge of accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG, ADA/Section 508) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles.
- Prior experience providing academic training or faculty development in higher education.
- Skill in applying frameworks such as backward design, UDL, and Quality Matters principles.
- Experience evaluating, integrating, and troubleshooting educational technologies and LTIs.

- Generally indoors in a normal office environment with minimal exposure to temperature changes, noise, dust, or chemicals.
- Normal college working hours with occasional adjustments involving evening and/or weekend work as required.

Information Technology Abilities- Ability to operate standard computer hardware systems and software (Microsoft Office applications and web-conferencing tools).
- Skill in utilizing Canvas for course design, content management, communication and analytics.
- Ability to troubleshoot common technical issues related to software, browsers, file formats and devices.
- Proficiency with multimedia tools for video creation, screen recording, audio editing, and basic graphic design (e.g., Canvas Studio, Canva).
- Competence in creating accessible digital content using LMS and third-party accessibility tools.
- Ability to evaluate and integrate educational technologies, including LTIs and external platforms.
- Understanding of web browsers, extensions, privacy settings, and compatibility considerations in online learning.

- Generally sedentary work but will involve mobility within the campus and various sites.
- Light lifting and physical activities may be required occasionally.
